Derwent was set up in 1996 in Cockermouth and moved to Silloth in 1998.

August 2014

On the 15th January 2013, Mark and Allie Johnson exchanged contracts with Frank Smith and Stuart Richardson to become the new owners of the Derwent Brewery.  Since becoming owners they have installed new plant and produced 5 new beers all of excellent quality.  The Brewery has increased its sales of real ale because of this.

Initially set up in 1996, it was in the Derwent Mill Trading Estate in Cockermouth, an ex-Jennings Head brewer, brewing for ex-Jennings Managers, in their own, first pub, the Bitter End. The Bitter End brewery was installed at the rear of the pub and Derwent Brewery moved to the current location in Silloth.

It is a 5 barrel plant run by Frank Smith, (former head brewer of Jennings Brewery, Cockermouth and of previously of Broughton Brewery).

A speciality of the brewery is using recipes from long gone Cumbrian Brewers.
Regular beers are Carlisle State Bitter, Parson’s Pledge, Whitwell Marks IPA and Auld Kendal. There are many interesting seasonals and specials to be found as guest beers around the county.
